The Twelve Days of Healthcare

On the Twelfth Day of Healthcare, my Congress gave to me… “Pre-existing Conditions”

Among the many flawed provisions of Obama’s government-run Health care, the most egregious in my view is forcing Insurers to cover patients regardless of their pre-existing conditions.

This is akin to suggesting that someone who has smoked for 30 years who has been diagnosed with lung cancer, can now "demand" Health insurance cover her even though she hasn't paid into the system for years as a smoker.

That is fundamentally wrong.

And that's not how Insurance works.

Another example. A couple of years ago, I was in a terrible accident.  Suffered 17 broken bones, a head injury, and other various injuries that placed me firmly in the Trauma Unit at the hospital. This happened on December 13th.  Thankfully, I had insurance.  Good insurance.  A PPO, in fact.  And I had paid into that PPO for a very long time, paying fairly high premiums.  It wasn’t fun seeing the hundred bucks or so coming out of my Paycheck each month.  I can think of ‘lots of things I’d rather have done with the money.  Jimmy Choo and his buddies were surely calling my name.  But I paid into the plan with the knowledge that someday I would need it. That’s how Insurance works.

Now, picture this.  Under Obama’s plan, I would have been able to wake up on December 14th and, if I didn’t have any Insurance, I could have “demanded” that an Insurance company cover all of my Medical expenses. Excuse me, but what Insurance company in their right mind would have wanted to cover someone whose body was battered and broken? I wouldn't have blamed them a bit!

Contrary to what the Obamanites would have you believe, Insurance is not a four-letter word.  It is a fair system into which you pay, according to your appetite for risk.  If you choose to have a little more taken out of your paycheck to buy the Cadillac plan, then you’ll get the Cadillac coverage.  If you would rather save money month-to-month, then you'll get the Chevy model. It's pretty simple. You choose to do so knowing that you’re taking a bit of a risk.  Notice the word “choose.”  Hmmm.  Why is it that Obama and friends are “pro-Choice” about most things except the Healthcare itself?

To suggest that we as Americans can make stupid choices without any consequences – and that Big Daddy government will be there to not only protect us, but PAY for it when things go wrong – well, that just goes against the American spirit.

Forcing companies to cover folks with pre-existing conditions is just plain wrong.  It’s like suggesting you want your money back after the Roulette wheel has landed on red --- when you’ve bet on black.
